Legislation to increase by $5 the cost of filing a lawsuit has been sent to Governor Tim Kaine's desk.
It doesn't sound like a lot of money, but the measure generated considerable debate on the House floor Wednesday. The bill would double the court filing fee to $10, with the additional money going to boost compensation for Legal Aid attorneys.
Opponents of the bill said it would impose a burden on small businesses trying to collect unpaid debts in court. But supporters of the measure said it's tough to keep Legal Aid attorneys, who provide free services to poor people but don't make much money themselves.
The House voted 69 to 27 to pass the bill.
