Fall Foliage Expected to Peak in Late October

With the cooler temperatures, sweaters are starting to get pulled out of storage, and with sweaters come the beautiful colors of Fall. So, when will we start to see the rich hues of golds and red on the trees?

Most of the leaves are still holding onto their green color but we are still very early into the Fall season.

"Peak in Central Virginia, the Charlottesville extended area," stated Gregg O'Donnell from the Virginia Department of Forestry, "it typically last until late October into early November."

The peak season for the trees is also the busiest season for mountain lodges.

Tina Deane, the Cabin Manager for "Lydia Mountain Lodge" said, "The leaves are just so beautiful and it's everybodys favorite time of year to come to the mountains."

For many lodges in the mountains, they are booked every weekend from now through the beginning of November but Deane suggests taking a vacation during the week. "They could get in through the week Sunday through Thursday which is a little quieter time up here. So, that's what I would encourage them to do.. come in through the week take some time off for themselves." suggested Deane.

But O'Donnell also said, "You don't have to go to the mountains to see beautiful color."

Just because the peak season falls in late October that doesn't mean we won't have beautiful sights up until them. O'Donnell said, "We'll have a little bit of color now and it will gradually increase as the oaks and hickorys change color."

Fall foliage in Virginia is one of those things that pictures can't truly capture and Deane said that her guest are always shocked, "When they get here they're even more surprised! They say the photos don't do us justice."

Living in Central Virginia gives us a front row seat to the action. "It's a great time to be outdoors and see this annual display.", said O'Donnell.

If you're interested in following Virginia's Fall foliage, it will be featured on the Virginia Department of Forestry website. Not only will it give you updates on the Fall colors but it can direct you toward some of the most scenic drives.
