The group, APVA Preservation Virginia, has put out a report detailing endangered historic sites in Virginia. One of their areas of concern is in New Market.
They say increased truck congestion along Route 11 threatens the historically significant town.
The group also looked at the potential widening of Interstate 81, but VDOT says there are no definite plans at this time to widen the highway. APVA has compiled information that describes how local historical sites would be impacted.
There have been talks for years about widening Interstate 81. VDOT also compiled a report that lays out different scenarios and how they would impact land in the I-81 corridor.
"These were very general, general assumptions about what 81 would look like if you added two lanes, etc," says I-81 program manager Fred Altizer. "It was an approximation."
In the report, VDOT says about 1,200 to 1,400 acres of battlefields would be impacted depending on how many lanes are added. This includes about 150 acres at the battlefield in New Market.
Officials at APVA say that in looking at endangered rural places, they also want to call attention to the I-81 debate.
"The entire I-81 corridor was named to the endangered list last year," says executive director Elizabeth Kostelny. "And, so we've been monitoring that situation sort of comprehensively."
