Within the Streetscape project, Harrisonburg is looking to add bike lanes on Main Street downtown. There are also plans to connect Hillendale Park with the new high school.

That will provide a bike loop, as well as become part of the physical education program for the school.

Harrisonburg Council Member Charles Chenault says that although some items had to be removed from this year's budget, the funding for sidewalks remains, which he says is the result of more people being interested in biking.

"The whole idea of this week is to encourage people to ride their bicycles to work. I know we have a lot of city employees, at least what I consider a lot of employees, that will be riding to work this week. And some have chosen this week to start riding on a long term basis," says Chenault.
