A detour on South Main Street will be disappearing a little earlier than expected. Outer construction of the pedestrian tunnel at JMU wrapped up a week early. Crews will concentrate on the inside next.

The tunnel leads from JMU's quad to the Performing Arts Center and new parking garage.

University spokesman Don Egle says, "Now with this connecting both sides underneath Main Street, our hope is that students, faculty and staff, and then guests of the campus will utilize that, hopefully cutting down substantially on pedestrian traffic across Main Street."

The tunnel will open to pedestrians in March 2010. However, the traffic detour will be lifted Thursday.
