Students at Stone Spring Elementary School in Harrisonburg learned a valuable lesson in fire safety Tuesday. First graders learned the most beneficial action is to stop, drop and roll.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, first grade teacher Dawn Cull taught her students the proper way to deal with a fire in a house.

Kids crawled underneath fake smoke covering the doorway to the classroom to teach them that if there is smoke in the house, you should stay as close to the floor as possible.

Then students practiced stop, drop, and roll with a prop: a balloon. Small balloons were tapes to their backs to simulate fire on their clothes, and kids had to roll until the "fire" was out.

The children also learned other fire safety tips including planning fire escape routes and checking fire alarms.
