A book drive held by the Rockingham County Educational Foundation and Barnes and Noble in Harrisonburg was far more successful than organizers had planned.
Their goal of 1,800 books was shattered. More than 3,000 books were donated at the Barnes and Noble.
Customers were asked if they'd like to donate to the book drive when paying for items at the cash register.
Barnes and Noble representatives say the giving spirit was amazing this year.
These books will fill the libraries of the 14 elementary schools in the Rockingham County Public School system.
"In these economic times and with budget cuts, it's so nice to have extra books to be able to give to children s so they can read, so they can sit down with a book and have time to be able to use their language skills," says Janet Wendelken, Executive Director of Rockingham Educational Foundation.
The books were donated in a short time period. The drive began in November.
