The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic has been providing health care for working, low-income residents for almost 20 years.

Social work coordinator Bernie Mathes says the free clinic is packed with patients, but some are struggling in the current economy, which is why the clinic created an alternative.

"This volunteering option has been a real blessing for some of our patients," says Mathes.

The clinic now allows patients to volunteer at nonprofit organizations and approved businesses in the area in exchange for health care.

Mathes suggested this option to patient Melissa Robey.

"She said, 'Well, I'll try.' She wasn't super enthusiastic but she said, 'I'll try,'" says Mathes.

Robey has been volunteering at the Massanutten Regional Library since February, and says it's been a great experience.

"It's taught me a lot, and I never even though about ever volunteering at a library before. And I've learned a lot, and I've learned how to deal with people," says Robey.

Mathes says she's really seen an increase in Robey's self-esteem.

"It has turned into an amazing opportunity for her to develop work skills and feel good about herself and the contribution to the community," says Mathes.

Robey says this opportunity allows her to share her qualities with the public and she's happy she's doing it.

"It's very rewarding, and I would say that definitely works. If other people were to volunteer I would say the library is number one," says Robey.

Robey is currently looking for a job, but she says even if she gets a full-time job she'll continue to come back to the library as a volunteer.
