The Harrisonburg Salvation Army kicked off its annual Turkey Drive Monday. Officials say the number of applicants for holiday assistance has increased from a year ago.

Their goal is to get more than 1,900 turkeys through donations and distribute the turkeys to 962 families in the community.

Last year, the Salvation Army exceeded its goal and distributed more than 1,600 turkeys.

"It amazes me sometimes the way this Valley does care about its people. I'm hoping this year they will continue to care and they can be in a situation where maybe they can bring us a turkey," says Capt. Duane Burleigh of the Harrisonburg Salvation Army.
