Construction on Churchville Avenue in Staunton has finally begun.

It's blocking traffic in one direction. The westbound lane on Churchville Avenue is still open, which helped ease drivers around the long-term detour.

The plan is to install water and sewer storm drains, widen the road to three and four road lanes in some places, and add brick sidewalks and crosswalks.

Cars were were frequently seen turning around, but most of the workers say day one was smooth.

"It was pretty good. A little bit of confusion, but just directing people where they need to go to get through the project. All the land owners were good, couldn't ask for better people to work with," says construction worker Wade Shifflett.

Construction on Churchville Avenue is expected to continue until the summer of 2011.
