In parts of the Valley, the Salvation Army Kettle Drive has begun.

In Winchester, the Salvation Army hopes to raise $150,000 to serve an increasing need in the area. However, it needed more than 1,000 volunteers to do so.

Due to a shortage in volunteers, the army was forced to hire most of the people who will be ringing the bells this year.

Maj. Dan Turner, Winchester Salvation Army, says, "Paid workers, and that's okay, they need a job, they need the work, and that's just fine, but we need more volunteers to take those locations so we can make that net better for direct service in this community."

Other army locations, including the one in Harrisonburg, will kick of the kettle drive Thursday.

Is our community really that selfish that the salvation army has a lack of volunteers, forcing them to hire people? Sad!
