A Rockingham County camp that helps foster care children needs to make some money, so everything is up for auction.
According to Col. Jack Bowman Auctions, funding for Camp Kaleidoscope has been cut. Everything from furniture to toys to two houses went up for sale Thursday morning.
Jack Bowman says the economy is forcing many people to sell what they don't need. He says he has six jobs a week these days as opposed to one a week during a normal year.
Bowman says many people resort to an auction before they get in debt.
"Some people have an auction prior, before they get themselves in a spot, and that way they just move to a new location, and they just move on," says Bowman. "Not all auctions are foreclosures. We do a lot of people moving from one location to another."
The buildings were sold as part of a "short sale" so the owners would not go into foreclosure.
The prices for both are still being negotiated.
Kaleidoscope officials could not be reached for comment, but on the camp's Website, Lee, Beth and Dianne write, "Camp K will be taking a sabbatical for an unknown period of time. Memories of smiles, laughter and an occasional tear will be cherished forever. Most of the tears shed were on the last day of camp when it was time to say goodbye, and those are the most treasured."
It is unknown if the camp will reopen.
