HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The American Cancer Society is looking for people in the Valley to donate some time for a cancer prevention study.

It's an effort to look at how genetics and environment influence a person's cancer risk.

In the Valley, the study will get underway in September.

People with the American Cancer Society are having meetings and planning for it and the study would last anywhere from 20 to 30 years.

But, other than an initial appointment, there's not an in person committment. Initially, a person who qualifies for the study comes in for one appointment that takes about 20 minutes.

If you want to see if you're eligible, there is information about signing up on the society's Facebook page. You have to be between 30 and 65 and at the appointment, you draw blood, fill out a survey and they measure your waist.

After that, you'd fill out a survey every two to three years, so the Community Director says there's not too much of an in-person commitment.

They are looking for 500 volunteers to take part in our area.

"What we've found is because we have such a strong relay connection with this area and the surrounding counties, we have great volunteers that are really excited about the opportunity to participate in such groundbreaking research on a national level but it's in their own backyard," Community Director Carrie Klamut said.

RMH, Augusta Health and the Waynesboro YMCA will be some of the enrollment locations in September.

A common question asked to researchers is whether or not you can take part if you smoke.

The answer is yes; they are looking for a variety of volunteers.

If you'd like to become more involved, you also have the opportunity to become community champion.

With that, the goal would be to recruit at least 10 people for the study.
