HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A local department store is giving back to the community.

A pilot program through Belk in Harrisonburg worked with United Way to give clothes and other items to charities.

Usually, out of season inventory goes back to headquarters and is donated from there. Instead, Store Manager Monty Kellog said he wanted to find a way to help people here.

From 8 a.m. until 10 a.m., Belk helped charity leaders, whose organizations have clothing needs.

United Way volunteers helped coordinate picking out items off the racks, while people loaded up boxes and racks.

The event took place in a separate space near Belk, leaving plenty of room for volunteers to move around.

Patty Sensabaugh with Second Home is preparing for an event on Saturday that will help low-income families.

"Oh this is fantastic we're so happy to have seen so many wonderful in style clothes of a variety of sizes for the men and women and the children. So they will be really excited to have new wardrobes and have really nice clothes from Belk. We really appreciate this," said Sensabaugh, the Executive Director of Second Home.

More than 1,600 pieces of merchandise were available and most of that was given away.

People from local businesses also donated their time by helping to load up boxes and cars full of clothes.

According to Belk's manager, there will be another event like this in October.
