HARRISONBURG -- A bill which passed in Virginia's Senate and House of Delegates would ease a student's burden to pay for college.

House Bill 2145 would let people deposit their income tax refunds into a Virginia college savings plan account. James Madison University's student government association supported this bill.

In 2012, taxpayers had two options for how to save their refunds. One would put money into a checking or savings account and the other put money onto a debit card.

If this bill goes into effect, that money would go directly into a college savings account.

Adam Miner, a JMU committee member, said it could help students pay for college.

“That way, you don't have to worry about trying to deposit other funds and trying to get them into another account, or trying to save up money in another way. It just streamlines the process and makes it a lot easier for those who pay into an account,” said Miner.

Republican Delegates John O'Bannon and Thomas Norment introduced the bill.
