WAYNESBORO, Va -- On Friday, Boy Scout Troop 47 was getting ready for Saturday's Apple Days celebration by making apple dumplings. The troop has made these dumplings for Apple Days for the past 25-years.
The apple dumpling sale is their only fundraiser during the year, so they have to make it count. The money they raise will go towards sending the boys on camping and hiking trips.
The reason they make so many is because these dumplings have gained popularity in the community throughout the years. It is not uncommon for people to buy two to three dozen dumplings to put in the freezer. Some say this fervor is all because of the secret sauce.
“You want a juicy dumpling,” said Tom Teerlink, on the Troop 47 committee. “We also make sure they're good and juicy because we make up a special secret sauce that we pour on them. It's a hot butter sauce. It really gives them the delicious taste that an apple dumpling should have.”
Volunteers helping with the dumpling preparation peeled, cored and folded 30 bushels of golden delicious apples into the dumplings.
