BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater College leaders officially broke ground Thursday for a $9 million renovation to its athletic facility.
Dozens of people came out for the ground breaking ceremony at Nininger Hall on campus.
This will not only be a renovation to the athletic facility, including a new turf field, extra locker rooms, gymnasium and other classrooms, but also it will include a 16,000 square foot expansion.
Bridgewater College Vice President of Finance Anne Keeler says it's a much needed renovation for the growing student body.
Plus she says it's a way to get more students to come to the college.
"It's a competitive aspect to this in terms of competing for those highly qualified students," said Keeler. "They have a lot of opportunities both in our region and throughout the United States, so if we can bring strong student athletes to our programs and to our campus, that's a benefit to all of us and to the ongoing success of the college."
Keeler says bringing more students to the college will also better the surrounding community economically.
The new facility will also include the Department of Health and Human Sciences.
College leaders expect the renovations to be complete by next summer.
