HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Bridgewater Town Council approved a new zoning ordinance to allow facilities providing housing, shelter and care for pregnant women into the Town's B-1 zoning classification. Specifically, East Gate Ministries was given a special-use permit to move to 401 Main Street.
A couple of citizens and business owners initially had concerns. They worried it could bring some undesirable situations and parking complications into the area.
At the council meeting, Ilsa Weaver, the owner of East Gate Ministries, explained there is an extensive application process and applicants must meet certain criteria to be eligible to live in the home. There will also be a strong security presence.
David Nichols is the Zoning Administrator for Bridgewater. He said this seems like an interest that will fit really well on Main Street.
"I think anything like this could help the community as a whole, not just Bridgewater, because Iilsa Weaver isn't necessarily drawing from women just in Bridgewater. Instead, it is anyone in the Shenandoah Valley. I think it is a critical issue in the world we live in now," said Nichols.
Another condition for them to stay at the property is only six women can live in the home at a time. There will also be two staff personnel at all time.
