STAUNTON, Va. -- A court-appointed special advocates group, called CASA, is expanding to Rockingham County and Harrisonburg.

CASA workers served about 100 children in the court system last year. Nearly twice that number of children need help in Rockingham County and CASA is expanding to advocate for them.

CASA members work alongside attorneys to advocate for what's best for a child going through the court system, who is often a child in foster care.

One volunteer said it's rewarding work.

“It's amazing what one person can do for another person, or a family, and also just to see how the court works. Everyone's really working to advocate for the child,” said Pam Hill, a CASA volunteer.

Working with a CASA volunteer usually means children spend less time in foster care.

The nationwide organization is looking for more volunteers to advocate for children in Rockingham County. CASA leaders hope to have volunteers in place by March.
