Cinderella Project Provides Prom Dresses To Students

STAUNTON, Va. - A local woman is expanding her effort to help high school students dress their best for prom season.

Volunteers like Courtney Aguylar are setting up shop at the Staunton Mall for the Cinderella Project which will soon sweep across the valley.

What the Cinderella Project does is put dresses in the hands of high school girls who need help getting clothes and accessories for prom.

According to organizer Debbie Shickel, the program also helps boys, and they plan to reach schools all across the valley.

"They go to their guidance department at their schools, and they get an invitation from the guidance counselor and the guidance counselor signs the invitation and then they come down here on Saturdays from 10 til 2 on March 22nd to May 17th," Shickel says, "this year we've added Rockbridge County with 2 schools down there, we've added Bath, Highland, Luray, Page, and three schools in Shenandoah County."

A lot of the dresses they get are from local stores and the volunteers play a big role too. Volunteer Kathe Morrison says helping high school students go to prom is rewarding.

"There was a girl that I helped in the past that her father was in the hospital with cancer, so her family was tied up with him," Morrison says, "she came in and needed help with a dress. Her mom wasn't able to come with her, a neighbor had brought her and we were able to get her in a dress."

That's what motivates the volunteers to come out and help high school students with that memorable part of their life, and they hope you do too.

"The more volunteers we have, the easier it is to help as many people as we can," Aguylar says.

Shickel says she still needs more volunteers and donations to keep the Cinderella project going.
