City Approves Removal of Traffic Signals

HARRISONBURG -- The city council approved taking down blinking traffic lights that some say could affect your driving.

"People drive very fast going on North Liberty from north to south," said Abbas Rawoot, who works near one of the traffic signals to be removed.

Harrisonburg city council sided with a transportation planner who requested two traffic signals along North Liberty Street and West Elizabeth and one on North Liberty Street and West Wolfe be removed.

"These intersections have been in flash operation for over ten years now, due to a lack of need for them to be fully operational," said Reed, who is a transportation planner with city of Harrisonburg.

Reed says he came to the conclusion after conducting a study.

"And found that neither of the intersections are required and we can go ahead and remove them," said Reed.

Rawoot who works near Wolfe street traffic signal says it needs to stay.

He says people traveling from this end of Wolfe Street, often times get into car accidents because of blind spots.

"Every three months there is a bang here. I have been here for the last five/six years and they are bad accidents," said Rawoot.

"We found one accident each intersection where someone had run a stop sign, but that's not something you can necessarily resolve with a traffic signal," said Reed.

Rawoot says instead of removing the signs, the city needs to enforce them.

"It needs to function regularly. Red. Green and not just stop and go. The way it is, it causes problems," said Rawoot.

Transportation planner Brad Reed could not provide me with an estimate of how much it will cost to remove the traffic signals but he did say in the end it will most likely save the city money.
