HARRISONBURG -- A streetscape plan could bring a roundabout to downtown. The proposal would also make streets more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

The roundabout would be on Mason Street and East Market Street with an added lane for tractor trailers. City leaders said it could make the area safer and prevent trucks from traveling on court square.

The plan also calls for making Gay Street only three lanes and adding a bicycle lane.

Kai Degner, a city council member, said he likes the plan, but he needs prices to determine what's feasible and what's not.

"This is a new proposal. We just saw it yesterday, but we need to do a good analysis of where are we gonna get the most bang for our buck,” he said.

The proposal would add a pedestrian path from the municipal building to Court Square. Degner said more pedestrian traffic could bring more business to downtown.

Public works will host a public hearing in May.
