City Planners, Developer Push for Revitalization of Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO, Va. -- Waynesboro is focusing on redevelopment and revitalization.

In addition to going in and looking at old properties for any environment concerns through the Brownfields grants, they're also trying to attract developers in general.

VM Acquisition Waynesboro LLC recently bought the old Virginia Metalcrafters building in May.

The consultant for VM Acquisition Waynesboro said that East Main Street, where the building is located, is a "gateway" into the city.

That part of Waynesboro is at the base of Afton mountain near Skyline Drive.

One third of grant funds as part of the Brownfield Redevelopment Planning Project will go toward revitalizing downtown and the East Main Street area.

The grant funds total $400,000, and the city obtained the money from the Environmental Protection Agency.

City planners hope other developers will join in on investing in the area.

There are a few tenants in the Virginia Metalcrafters building now.

John Eckman, the consultant, said it's ready to be redeveloped further.

Virginia Metalcrafters closed in 2006.

Eckman said investing in Waynesboro is a step in the right direction.

"These things can be clean, green, and revitalized into all sorts of different uses. Waynesboro has a long history as a factory town and a lot of employment in factories. And it's been sad to see that change over the years, and one of the first steps in making Waynesboro have a comeback is to bring these buildings back," said Eckman.

They aren't revealing specific plans for the building, because they say it's too early.
