STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (WHSV) -- Good neighbors in Augusta County are collecting gloves to send to orphans in Ukraine, and in the process showing that kids of all ages can make a difference.

Tonia Hicks' kindergarten class at Ridgeview Christian School in Stuarts Draft collected 77 pairs of gloves and mittens after getting the idea from "The Mitten Tree," a book they read in class.

Hicks said she is proud of her kids, who aren't old enough to know what the world really looks like, but still see a need and want to help.

When asked why they wanted to help kids who don't have gloves, kindergartener Silas Martin responded, "So their hands can stay warm so they won't get so cold."

"We just want to be helpful because God's Word says help everybody. God loves us," said Noah Anastopolus, another student in the class.

Hicks said the kids now want to help kids and families in their own community, so they're going to put together food boxes for a local food pantry.
