HARRISONBURG -- The James Madison University community is celebrating its new president. After almost a year on the job, Jonathan Alger had his inauguration to welcome him to campus.

The ceremony was filled with music and memories of what's making JMU a big player when it comes to higher education. On Friday night, the university's sixth president was looking to what's next for JMU.

There were many claps and cheers Friday afternoon for the Pres. Alger. The university's sixth leader was an obvious choice for the board of visitors.

"Entrust in you, to carry on what's been carried on at this university for 105 years," said Joseph Funkhouser to Pres. Alger at the event.

The many speakers, including Gov. Bob McDonnell, welcomed Pres. Alger and his family to Virginia.

"We're delighted to have you from New Jersey, to Virginia. Welcome home," said Gov. McDonnell.

Even two former university presidents were in the crowd.

It was part of a look back at where the university has been, but as many of the speakers talked about the university's past at the inauguration, the new president talked about the future.

"New educational technologies, changing demographics, our funding model and issues of access and affordability," said Pres. Alger.

Pres. Alger also wanted to make the campus more diverse.

"We understand that diversity and excellence go hand in hand in education."

The new president wants to push students and staff to their fullest potential.

"And let's dream big together.”

On Saturday, Pres. Alger will go to Montpelier with a group from the university to honor James Madison on his birthday. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
