A death investigation in Harrisonburg moves into a new phase. There are still few details from police about this case, but the apartment complex where it happened is working to calm fears its tenants may have.
It's been more than 34 hours since a man's body was found an apartment on Dutch Mill Court. Police haven't released his identity as they wait on the chief medical examiner.
"It seemed like the body had been there for a few days. When our maintenance man saw the body it seemed the body had been in bad condition." said complex office manager Thad Christophel.
Thad Christophel's family has owned the complex for 30 years. He says nothing like this has ever happened here.
"We're still, I think, trying to figure out how to process it." said Christophel.
Christophel Properties is sending a letter to its tenants. It reads in part, "Our main priority now is for the safety and peace of mind of our tenants. Our sincere hope is that this is an isolated incident, not compromising your safety here in this community."
People who live in the complex see signs showing there is a security camera rolling 24 hours a day, but the office manager says those cameras aren't in the part of the complex where the body was found.
Christophel says the cameras are in the main areas of the property. He hopes tenants who are thinking about moving out, hold off.
"We're hoping that the people can be strong through this. It's a tough situation." said Christophel.
Police say investigators are working with the medical examiner's office to figure out who the man is and how he died. They still need your help. If you know anything, call Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050.
