HARRISONBURG -- As part of the safe routes to school program, Virginia Avenue will undergo major improvements.

Waterman Elementary School students will have a much safer walk to school thanks to new sidewalks.

From West Gay to 5th Street on Virginia Avenue, you will notice the construction. New sidewalks are being put in.

Installation of new pedestrian signals and other work started in March.

This all from a Virginia Department of Transportation grant to improve walking and biking around Waterman Elementary School.

Parents like Mike Sarco are relieved to see the new sidewalks.

"I think they should have done it a long time ago, but I'm glad they're doing it. We used to live on Stuart Street and didn't walk to school some just because of the traffic," said Sarco.

Construction will continue through November on the surrounding neighborhoods.
