HARRISONBURG (WHSV) -- Drivers may get some relief next time they fill up with gas, but customers may pay more for retail items.

Starting on July 1st, gasoline in Virginia could be a little cheaper when Gov. Bob McDonnell's transportation plan goes into effect.

"The end result will impact for motorists should be about 6 cents a gallon," said Martha Meade, the manager of public affairs with AAA.

That's cause for excitement among drivers.

"Going down is good. I gave up a car because of high gas prices," said Norman Jones, a driver.

The transportation plan calls for lowering Virginia's 17 cents per gallon gas tax and increasing Virginia's sales tax.

Meade said the price decrease may not be felt right away.

"We don't expect for suddenly at the stroke at midnight on Sunday night that suddenly the prices are going to drop," said Meade.

Not everyone thinks gas prices will decrease. Christopher Mantz, who is unemployed, thinks gas companies will always guzzle for more money.

"It's nice to see it low, but it's going to go back up. So I guess, get it while you can," said Mantz, another driver.

Meade said the retailer will decide the price of gas.

"The price is set at the retail level, so whether they pass the savings on to the consumer will be up to the retailer," said Meade.

According to AAA, if gas companies share the wealth, Virginia could be the fourth most affordable state in the country to purchase gas.

New traffic safety laws also go into effect on Monday, including a tougher law dealing with distracted driving.
