AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- A father left his keys in the car with his kids in the back seat when he went inside to pay. That's when police say Jeremiah Martin stole the car.
When the father saw his car was stolen, he hopped into a stranger's car to track the man down.
Martin was in Augusta County's general district court on Tuesday facing several charges, including driving under the influence and stealing a car.
Surveillance video shows a man leaving a gas station in Augusta County. Then it shows a man jumping in the car and droving away.
On Tuesday, attorneys corrected a DUI charge. They also certified charges of stealing a car and theft. That means the case will head to a grand jury in January.
A good neighbor who helped chase down the car said the children in the car slept through the entire ordeal. He said this should be a lesson learned for all parents to never leave their cars unlocked with their kids inside.
