Daylily Festival Draws More Vendors

FISHERSVILLE, Va. -- The Daylily festival, one of the Shenandoah Valley's largest summer events, kicks off in Fishersville on Saturday.

In spite of the heat, crews set up tents for the event and family friends of the Viettes also helped to prune the daylilies.

The festival features wineries and food, but it's also, of course, about the flowers.

The Viettes own a farm and nursery in Fishersville and develop hybrids of daylilies.

Some of them will be announced at the festival and depending on the flower, they won't be available until 2014.

The festival will start at 10 a.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, the day kicks off at noon and the festival will go on rain or shine.

"You know a light shower or a misting will help cool us off. So occassionally that's happened every year we've gotten a nice shower. With all the rain we've had this year...it helped the daylilies look the best," said Viette.

They have expanded the Farmers Market tent and made a food court area this year.

"Daylilies themselves are really easy to grow it's what I call a purple thumb plant and the whole event is wrapped around that. That there is something for everybody to do, so if you've got children, bring your children, family, bring your family or just go yourself and enjoy a little bit of the Shenandoah Valley," said Viette.

There are more than 20 Virginia wineries that will be here at the two day festival and there will be more than 75 vendors.
