Planning for Ice With Proper Footwear

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- It is important to have the right kind of gear when dealing with cold weather, which includes the proper footwear.

Hiking boots, which have deep tread, help walkers grip the ground in icy conditions. With the ice that covers a lot of local parking lots and sidewalks, with the wrong kind of shoes, you'll got slipping and sliding all over the place, which can lead to injuries.

Getting hurt out in the cold is something local outfitting experts are trying to prevent.

"If your feet get cold very easily, I'd prefer something insulated. I also have waterproof shoes as well all with deep, deep traction on them. You could slip and fall and twist your ankle or something worse. You could bust your bottom," explained Jessica Taylor, Store Manager at Walkabout Outfitter in Harrisonburg.

Boots and shoes that have a flat and slippery sole aren't good for winter weather. Shoes with deep tread will hold you steady, and a rubber sole really helps give you traction as well. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
