HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Free dental care is being given out to many who can't afford it this holiday season. More than 200 people are expected to take advantage of the free dental care.

SmileMakers on East Market Street hosted the event, which started on Wednesday and will end on Friday.

Forty volunteers pledged their time to help with the event. Dentists, hygienists and office workers were just a few that donated their time. One volunteer said seeing patients' reactions is what made it worthwhile.

“People's expectations are just blown out of the water. We can treat them with kindness and maybe help them with their mouth in some way then we feel like we have done something,” said Greg Johnson, a volunteer dentist.

Johnson believed the need is great and he said they are "just skimming the surface."

Phone calls came pouring in with people looking for an appointment and it wasn't long before all the appointments had been filled.
