WAYNESBORO, Va --- When tourists are traveling, and they stop to get gas, they usually ask someone at the pump next to them what is there to do in the town. Leaders with the Waynesboro Department of Tourism wants to make sure everyone in Waynesboro knows things to recommend.
Forty-five-percent of the people that visit Waynesboro are coming to visit family or friends. That leaves a significant portion of visitors that are not familiar with the area.
Monday's trade show put more than 20 of the hottest destinations in Waynesboro in a room and let people find out more about each one of them. It was an effort to make sure those awkward gas station conversations end in a positive way.
“They're going to say, 'How do I get to so and so?' or 'Where's a good place to eat?' or 'What do you do here for fun?' We really want them to know how to respond to them and get them to where they're looking for. We don't want them to say there's nothing to do in Waynesboro, because there's tons to do,” said Katie McElroy, the tourism director for Waynesboro.
The main goal is to keep business within the the city, rather than send it elsewhere.
