HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- September is Emergency Preparedness Month and many first responders want to make sure you have everything you need should disaster strike.
The Harrisonburg Fire Department is making a big push this year.
One of the scenarios they are using is last year's derecho storm which caught many people off guard.
Your emergency kit or stock pile should include batteries, flashlights, bottled water and for some people maybe even generators.
Fire Prevention Specialist Lieutenant Wanda Willis stressed that our area can be prone to flooding so make sure to be prepared for all scenarios that may sweep through the Valley.
"Think about your own family and think about what you can do to protect your own family, and a lot of times we think we are going to depend on public safety to help us, but sometimes in an emergency they cannot get to you very quickly," said Willis.
Willis urges people to sign up for their free alert system which can send a text message to your phone in case or an emergency.
