ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va -- South River Elementary's principal said it is the first school in the county to get the Blue Ribbon award and one of only nine schools in Virginia to get it this year.

Blue Ribbon awards are given to schools that show improvement and high performance in areas like math and English.

Principal of South River Elementary Larry Shifflett said this award is the biggest the school has ever received.

“We make it a focus to work hard and we celebrate when we earn these recognitions. We've got some other awards over the years but this one, by far, is the sweetest of them all," said Shifflett.

Students and teachers will be wearing blue this Friday to celebrate their achievement.
