BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Elizabeth Smart, an advocate for legislative change as it relates to child abduction and recovery programs, will be in Bridgewater Monday night.

Smart will tell her story at Bridgewater College at 7:30 p.m. at Cole Hall. Smart's kidnapping made headlines and her recovery and advocacy has led to awareness.

Professor Jeffrey Pierson said they really look for speakers who have overcome adversity.

Pierson wants students to hear Smart's story and see how she triumphumed after a horrific situation.

Smart was kidnapped at 14 and sexually abused by her captors for nine months in 2002. Nine months later, a biker recognized her and she was rescued.

Now 25, she is the president of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation and an ABC News contributor when it comes to abduction cases.

Smart also promotes the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act and the the National Amber Alert.

Pierson said Smart is speaking out more now about her experience because the trial against her captor is over with.

Pierson said the fear of abduction is a fear students and parents can relate to.
"It is every parents' worst nightmare, I mean the idea of somebody coming into your house in the middle of the night and kidnapping your child, it's something that you see on movies but I mean, it's just really scary," Pierson said.

The speech is free and open to the public.

Also on Monday at 5 p.m., WHSV's Bob Corso sits down with Elizabeth Smart for an exclusive interview.
