AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va -- The general manager of the Augusta County Expo said thousands of people can fit in the space for the outdoor event.

Augusta Expo General Manager John Scott has a busy week ahead as he plans to host Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney and Vice-Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan in the Valley.

“We're getting slammed with phone calls here and at the office. We're learning more about everything today,” said Scott.

Romney's team's working this week to plan his visit to the Expo. Expo Board President Jerry Pence said the grounds provide something important for the campaign.

“Location, location, location,” said Pence.

Scott said that factored in to the decision to choose The Expo.

“It's a crossroads of Virginia, really. I-64 and 81, It's a great location for any event of this size, and folks will be able to come from everywhere,” said Scott.

At least 10,000 people can fit outside the Expo and that means more security is needed. Visitors can expect to be screened, much like at the airport.

Scott hopes the event will bring more attention to Augusta County.

“It really supports the community in that way, and being able to have a facility here that will allow this to happen, it's been great,” said Pence.

The first presidential debate is scheduled for Wednesday night and Scott said their visit will be crucial with the election just more than a month away.

“Most people wait to make up their minds. They want to see and hear everything they can, politically,” said Scott.

Doors open here at the Expo on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Romney and Ryan are expected there around 6 p.m. Country singer Trace Adkins will kick off the event.

A spokesperson with the campaign said the rain plan is inside the Augusta Expo building and that fits about 2,000 people.
