AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (WHSV) -- Several families are lucky to be alive after a fire ripped through their homes early Sunday morning.
House 112 at Townhouse Lane is where a man and his fiance were able to escape after they realized there was a fire burning in their home.
Now, all that's left is ruin.
Aaron Campbell says he was lucky to get out after waking up in the chaos.
"I turn the curtain back, and it's just orange all outside the window, and I said, 'It's a fire. Go!'" Campbell shared.
He, his fiance, and one of three cats managed to get out alive as the fire spread.
"I hear banging at my front door and yelling. I open the door and someone yells, 'Get out! Your house is on fire,'" said April Cale Smith who lived a few doors down from Campbell.
Though her home looks okay outside, inside, it will take a lot of work to get back to normal.
"It's been kind of a whirlwind. As of right now, we're just taking it a minute at a time," Smith continued.
For her and Campbell, the clean up is just beginning.
"God was really looking out for us,” Smith added.
"It's really hard to just sit there and watch your stuff go away," concluded Campbell.
As far as what's next with these families, the people we talked to say they're already in the process of trying to find a new place to live.
Preliminary findings show that the fire was accidental and that it started outside the building.
