Fire Damages Car Port in New Market

NEW MARKET, Va. (WHSV) -- A fire in New Market on Sunday damaged a car port near an apartment building. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The fire happened on John Sevier Road next to a car inspection station.

Public Information Officer John Collins with Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue said the apartment building that's next to it is being renovated. Because of the construction work, no one currently lives in the building.

Collins said the weather didn't help things.

"Well a day like today, the fire danger is higher today. It's been a little bit dry and it's been windy," said Collins.

Crews spent some extra time checking for hotspots, but most left relatively quickly.

Collins was unsure of the cost of the damage.
