HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- It's Fire Prevention Week and the Harrisonburg Fire Department has a display set up at the Valley Mall to educate neighbors and hand out StoveTop FireStop units.

The fire department said kitchen fires are the most common among house fires.

Last week, the StoveTop FireStop units prevented two apartment fires.

It's a small device that will put out a fire on your stove, which is placed above the stove, under the hood.

The fire department has been handing them out and even installing them in homes in Harrisonburg.

Fire safety officer Wanda Willis said it is a tiny life saver.

"We had two last week that actually activated. And what they do is, when the fire hits the little wick on them, it will open up and put out the fire, it's like a little fire extinguisher on your stove, and it's like having your own personal fire fighter right there at home," said Willis.

The display will be at the Valley Mall all week.

Willis said she will give out the free FireStops until they're gone.
