ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- Local numbers show the flu is "widespread" in the Shenandoah Valley.
That is the most serious category when it comes to tracking the flu in Virginia.
This graph from the Virginia Department of Health shows the percent of patients visiting doctors with flu-like symptoms. There is clearly an upward trend as the graph approaches the end of December of 2013. That's the most recent data available.
With symptoms on the rise here in the Valley, we checked in with local schools to see what nurses are dealing with when it comes to students.
At Turner Ashby High School, nurse Emily Heatwole said she is hear typical complaints from kids, That doesn't mean she's letting her guard down, however, as we head into the height of flu season.
"We haven't had, I don't believe, I rash of illnesses yet or a lot of flu yet, but I know it's out there. We get reports from the health department about what they're seeing. During Christmas, there was some flu activity, so we are always looking for that," explained Heatwole.
