AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va -- Family and friends grieved the death of Melvin Jordan on Monday. He was the man who recently died, months after he was shot at the Skyline Motel in Fishersville, but it is not clear if his death is related to the shooting.
Fred Jordan, Melvin Jordan's brother, spoke with Melvin every day, until Melvin Jordan died six months after being shot in Fishersville.
“He will be greatly missed,” said Fred. “That was my friend, that was my brother. That was my best friend.”
Fred said his brother was recovering at the Skyline Motel in Fishersville after doctors released him from the hospital in June.
“He was hurting, but his spirit was unbreakable. I talked to him every day, and he was still Mel, laughing and enjoying himself, laughing and talkative.”
Fred said his brother didn't have insurance and a funeral would cost thousands of dollars. That's why Charlotte Fisher and Brandon Marshall, two family friends, are raising money for the Jordan family.
“My whole family loved him to death,” said Fisher, “He would do anything in the world for us, anything. He was always there.”
Marshall wanted to help the family, just as they had helped his family in the past.
“I just want to help the family with peace. They don't have money; we don't have money. We're all out here trying to help,” said Marshall.
Fred said the shooting caused his brother lots of pain. He called Melvin's death devastating and wants the best for his two children. It is what Mel and Fred's parents wanted.
“Mom and dad raised us the right way, well-mannered, hard-working and a fun-loving person,” said Fred Jordan.
He called help from good neighbors a blessing.
“Just trying to get something done. Just trying to send my brother home.”
Jordan's family is waiting on the autopsy results to learn exactly how he died.
Jerad Ross is charged with shooting Melvin Jordan and Ross is being held in the Middle River Regional Jail for attempted first degree murder. This case will head to trial early next year.
