AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va –- At the bottom of this article are photos taken of a deer carcass draped over a political sign supporting the Obama campaign. It is one of several acts of vandalism on political signs so far this year.

Workers with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said vandalism happens nearly every election season.

Roder Owen, a peacemaking professor at Mary Baldwin College, hoped it will help jump start productive conversations about politics.

“My hope is that we in America will lean away from the potential we have for political-inspired violence,” said Owen. “That we can have healthy debate but not let it descend to a level where people are threatened or where people feel like their lives are in jeopardy.”

Vandalizing political signs is illegal in Virginia.
