Good Neighbors Help Those Struggling with Power Outages

Posted: Thu 7:19 PM, Jul 05, 2012

Pendleton County is where good neighbors help those who are still struggling. Bonnie Hottinger said she saw the worst of the storm that hit Pendleton County.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Hottinger.

More than 1200 people with Mon Power in Pendleton County are still dealing with outages.

Hottinger lost power for days and she said it was a struggle.

"I use to live with the lamps. You know with the kerosene lamps, but now I have asthma. So it was hard cause the fumes came out in the house."

Hottinger just got her power back but now she needs food. She said it all went bad after her fridge was off for so long.

"I knew I couldn't replace it right now because we pay bills with our money."

That was why volunteers, like the Blands, bring food and water to neighbors like Hottinger.

Nila Bland helped people all week from the volunteer fire department in Brandywine.

"I have never seen a storm like this in this area, and it was widespread. Pretty much the entire county was affected in pretty much every area," said Bland.

Now, even with the power back on for some, there is still a need for a helping hand.

"I appreciate that. Got nice neighbors," said Hottinger.

Bland said a lot of the people here in Brandywine got their power back, but she said there were still some folks who may not get their power back until Sunday.

The volunteer fire department in Brandywine was serving as a cooling shelter all week, but Thursday it closed.

If you still need help, you can go to the fire department to get food and water.
