Goodlatte Hosts Job Fair at Augusta Expo

FISHERSVILLE,Va. (WHSV) -- Hundreds of people attended Monday's job fair held by Congressman Bob Goodlatte's office at the Augusta Expo.

Lisa Coleman is one of over 50 employers looking to hire at the job fair today as the pool building business she co-owns is expanding.

"We're here today because we're hiring," said Coleman.

For her business, things have been going well. A few years ago, she had to make layoffs, but today that's a distant memory.

"I believe the economy is loosened up. I think people are not so afraid to spend their money for luxury items, which is what we are," said Coleman.

Some like Katharine Gibbs from Fishersville, who is looking for a part-time job, also think now is the time to re-enter the job market.

"I think the economy is going to pick up because where else will it go?" said Gibbs.

Recent data does show the unemployment rate in Virginia is way down from its peak at over 7 percent a few years ago.

Congressman Bob Goodlatte whose office organized Monday's event said things could still be better.

"I think the economy is slowly picking up. It's not as vibrant as we would like it to be, but it is definitely improving," said Goodlatte.

Organizers said they expect the job fair to bring about 1,000 people.
