HARRISONBURG -- A group is one step closer to starting an off-leash dog park.

Members of Happy Dogs Unleashed raised more than $14,000 since 2011. The goal is $16,000 to pay for the fence.

Organizer DD Dawson said the dog park is part of the city's master plan, but members of city council have not allocated funding for the project.

They set the location on Smithland Road and Old Furnace Road.

Dawson said coming up with the money is the first and the biggest step.

"It feels really great. It feels even better when we have our leash-cutting ceremony when we actually invite all of the people that have been instrumental on getting this park built to the site and we can open the gate and watch our dogs run, off leash," said Dawson.

She hopes by this summer, crews will break ground.
