Friday was world Elder Abuse Awareness Day and in the Valley, the Program for Aging Services said elderly abuse is common.

Now is the time to help.

People met in Staunton to learn more about the problems that senior citizens face. The group held a discussion at the Staunton Senior Center to discuss the most common forms of abuse.

Lyn Harris is the center's director and she said elderly abuse can be physical, neglect or exploitation. She said many people take advantage of senior citizens, especially to steal their money. That is why the community needs to learn how to protect them.

"It's difficult when the person who is there to take care of you is the person who is doing the hurting. Who do you talk to? Who do you get help from?" said Harris.

Harris said senior citizens can always go to their local senior center for help if they feel like they are being abused.
