An increase in gun sales has led to a shortage in ammunition.

With gun control being the topic of a national conversation, many people are becoming gun owners, not knowing what changes may come. This mad rush to pack heat could lead many to end up shooting blanks.

For April Dovel, guns are a way of life.

"I'm a gun girl," said Dovel.

This petite woman with huge knowledge about guns is having a hard time finding the ammo she needs.

"Just a 22. We go out and plank around with it at the gun range, we cannot find ammo for that anywhere," said Dovel.

April and her boyfriend are regular customers at Ashby Arms. Owner Dennis Golden is having a hard time keeping ammunition on his store's shelves. He says it's been this way since last month's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

"The ammo that's flying off the shelves is directly proportional to the guns that are flying off the shelves," said Golden.

Handguns are some of the most popular right now and the magazine that comes with it is constantly sold out. Because of that, Ashby Arms has had to put a limit on the number of boxes of bullets customers can buy.

"Self-defense handguns, self-defense rifles, that's the ammo that's going along with it and that's what we have to limit," said Golden.

Golden says shipments are taking two weeks, up from the usual few days. Dovel says she understands.

"But it's frustrating when you just want things to be back to normal," said Dovel.

There are also police departments facing an ammo shortage nationwide. Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office tells News 3 that's not a problem at this time.
