Health Care Scams On the Rise

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Better Business Bureau is warning of a scam ahead of health care exchanges happening on October 1st.

They're warning that you could be called by a scammer and if you are not careful, you may give out personal information.

The biggest red flag would be if you already have health insurance, you do not need to sign up on October 1st.

The other red flag is simply the phone call

If your phone rings and someone is trying to sign you up for health insurance, Julie Wheeler, the President of the local the Better Business Bureau, said hang up.

"When there is a new program it gives crooks and scammers a new way and opportunity to get your personal information and banking information," said Wheeler.

So far Wheeler isn't aware of anyone in our area getting a phone call, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.

Scammers are currently hitting people in larger cities, so the door could open for scammers here on October 1st.

"I am worried because this is exactly where you could have people calling saying I am an insurance broker you need insurance give your name, rank and serial number. But that is not what is suppose to happen," said Dr. David Cockley, a JMU professor.

Cockley said you should be calling the insurance companies for your health insurance.

Another thing to keep in mind is you have several months to shop around for the best plan for you.

Remember, the only people who need to sign up are uninsured people.

"There is a lot of information out there, some of it good some of it not so good about the health exchanges or the health market places. I would certainly say if someone is getting pressure from a sales person or caller, my ears would go up and I would start to be suspicious then," said Cockley.

Cockley also said if you have any questions or need help navigating through all the information you can go to which can answer many individual questions. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
