One young man is a humble hero in Staunton. Craig Johnson was born and raised here and just moved back home.
"I was planning on looking for jobs and trying to get some errands done and ended up saving someone's life. It's a pretty interesting day," said Craig Johnson.
He was driving down Barterbrook Road and noticed smoke coming from the back of one house.
He stopped to call 9-1-1. While he was on the phone, a neighbor went up to the house and began knocking on the door and did not get a response.
"At that point, Terri opened up the door and smoke comes billowing out. So we both get down onto our hands and knees.” said Johnson.
“Terri calls out 'hello, hello' and that is when the elderly woman who lived there called back, 'I'm here.' Terri must have seen her first because I saw her grab onto her and I grabbed her as well and we both carried her out," said Johnson.
He was able to carry her to safety. Then, the firemen showed up and took over.
When I met up with him just a few hours later, it seemed as though nothing had happened.
"It's kind of unreal, like what do you say to someone says, 'so what did you do today? Oh, I pulled a lady out a burning house. What do you do today?' I mean so yeah, we just decide to go bowling,” said Johnson.
What else is there to do..I mean?"
It was an ordinary night of bowling with his friends, but his best friend said Craig was anything but ordinary.
"I think there should be more people like that in the world that would just risk their lives just to save somebody else' life. I mean that's amazing. I'm proud of him."
